Department of Justice Enters Lawsuit to Block the State of California's Congressional Map
Federal authorities has entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to block the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Broader Implications
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the major response by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will shape the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and possible further challenges.
