The Legendary Anime Concludes a 27-Year Tradition in the Coming Year

It's the end of a long-standing era for long-running series, with the production studio revealing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in January, once the current storyline concludes, the animated series will take a quarterly break until spring, when the next major arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

Going forward, the series will produce two seasons every year for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more content, rhythm, and pacing of the original manga.” Yet, Toei end by promising “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which means additional One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime had a six-month pause that started in October 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The intermission was for the animators to enhance the visuals and allow the comic to build a lead to avoid a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The show greatly benefited from this respite, and it has managed to supply viewers with numerous fight scenes, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although a few summary installments appeared during this season, the benefits of this updated approach greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the story. This also gives the manga, which is presently in the middle of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the anime. Per the news, this may result in a single installment of the anime covering a single manga chapter, with some alternatively covering more material or additional to compensate for time.

It's the end of a generation for anime, as the epic saga is the final major title to abandon the old-school way of creation, which focused on being on air for almost the entire year. It's the reason why classics such as Naruto, and naturally itself have so many side stories, and the standard of the animation can vary widely between one episode and the next. Nowadays, series creation is organized in seasons, with one or two at most coming out each year, allowing for improved visuals and more faithfulness to the source material.
